Ever since 1959, we have been using nothing but the best raw materials for our products. We process organic and conventional products with the same high level of care. bio-familia is a proud pioneer of organic farming. Our purchase guarantees of grain and fruit have been supporting organic farming in Switzerland since its beginning. Thanks to our suppliers’ quality guarantees, only the best natural products go into every familia müesli. Now and forever.
Dr Bircher-Benner was a Swiss physician and the inventor of the original Bircher müesli. Today, we pick all raw ingredients based on market requirements and the latest insights in nutritional science.
All familia Müeslis contain only Happy Hazelnut-certified hazelnuts. Through targeted and innovative solutions, the Happy Hazelnut initiative makes a contribution to sustainable, local hazelnut farming in Turkey. It aims to improve the working conditions of Turkish harvest workers and prevent child labour. Find out more about the project at www.happyhazelnut.com.
Hazelnuts and almonds contain a large amount of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. We use a traditional process to toast our hazelnuts and almonds before hand-picking the best. The toasting process gives them a rich flavour that fully comes into its own in our various müesli mixtures.
In our familia müesli, we use wholegrain cereals wherever possible. This means that the grains retain their external husk, which is rich in fibre, and the germ bud. The result is a boost for your digestive system, long-lasting satiety and an optimal supply of high quality oil – without any adverse effects.
The external grain husk also contains important vitamins and trace elements, such as vitamin E, B vitamins, magnesium, calcium and iron.
Most of our apple chunks come with their peel, as it contains a wealth of valuable fibre and flavours. The organic apple chunks are not sulphurised, so they have a slightly brown appearance. All the apples used for the fruit flakes in our Müesli come from Swiss farmers; the Knospe-certified organic apples come from standard trees. We prefer using apples that are sweet yet a little tart, to give our Müesli a fresh and fruity taste.
We add various types of fruit to our müesli to sweeten naturally. This improves the flavour and the appearance.
Oat is an ancient grain from Scandinavia. It leaves you satiated for longer and contains a lot of protein, high quality oils and valuable minerals, such as magnesium and iron. The original recipe by Dr Bircher-Benner contains all cereals except oats.
Barley is used primarily in animal feed and the production of malt and beer. We love barley: it is a filling cereal that goes well with many types of müesli.
Wheat is the typical bread-making cereal in our part of the world. It also forms the basis for most pasta products. This low-fat grain contains a large amount of gluten (protein), which is important for its baking properties. Wholegrain wheat flour is rich in fibre and is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals.
Spelt is the prototypical ancient grain. It is easy to cultivate and frequently grown organically. Spelt is a special type of cereal: it is an excellent source of protein and essential amino acids. Compared with wheat, it contains impressive amounts of minerals and essential fatty acids.

Combating food waste with ‘oft länger gut’
Together with Too Good To Go, bio-familia is working to reduce household food waste. All Swiss familia Müesli bear the phrase ‘often good after’ next to the best before date, to highlight that the products are often still good to eat after this date.
